Climate-related severe weather is threatening crops and livestock around the country, leading to lower yields and profits for farmers and higher prices and empty shelves for shoppers.
Despite this, most Americans are unaware that farmers can play a crucial role in addressing these challenges. The agriculture industry alone emits a quarter of U.S. greenhouse gases. However, by adopting more sustainable practices, we could potentially reduce 90 percent of the industry’s emissions.
The Inflation Reduction Act presents a significant opportunity to achieve this. With $20 billion already allocated to climate-smart USDA conservation programs, which have proven effective, the IRA enables farmers to enhance water and soil quality, withstand severe weather events, increase food production, and simultaneously reduce harmful emissions that jeopardize future yields.
